Presentation Summary

Public speaking is an art and skill that cannot only be learned but also mastered. It is crucial to understand that there are numerous benefits of speaking in public, both to an individual and even business. For a precise elaboration of the components of public speaking, it is essential to summarize the fourteen chapters that were presented in class. The first group gave an introduction to public speaking. This was achieved in the first four chapters, which were identified as getting started with public speaking, preparing your first presentation, selecting a topic and purpose, and analyzing your audience. The first subtopic stated was speaking excites. This precisely elaborated on the first time an individual engages in public speaking and the emotions experienced. The most common feeling experienced by individuals is nervousness. It is crucial to understand that after some time, one gets to manage the senses and offer one's best. 

In the first chapter, we also got to learn the importance of public speaking. These factors include the creation of solid relationships and speaking for ourselves. In this chapter, we also get to know the seven components of the communication process. These include the source, receiver, message, a channel, feedback, the situation, and noise. As one gets to learn public speaking, it is essential to learn about the topics to speak about. Considering factors such as choosing the most vital issues and topics that improve an audience are the priorities. It is also essential to understand factors to avoid while presenting. These may include insulting the audience and plagiarism. The chapter also indicates the importance of reducing the fear of presentation. It is essential to challenge your worries and practice more before engaging in anything.

In the second chapter, we learn how to prepare for a presentation. This is achieved by gathering the appropriate materials, reviewing the expectations, maintaining organization and clarity, and practicing. It is also crucial to understand the common types of presentations. These include impromptu presentations, self-presentations, demonstration presentations, and classmate presentations. In all these types of presentations, it is essential to search for a topic and purpose precisely. The search for a topic can be achieved by a perfect evaluation. It is necessary to check both the general meaning and the specific purpose. It is also essential to consider the thesis statement. After having an ideal topic, it is vital for your audience. This can be done through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and group identification. Lastly, we have the analysis of the situation. This will include the size of the audience, time, occasion, and environment. As mentioned, the uniqueness of the classroom audience is an essential factor to consider. A speaker is also required to adapt to the audience and show ethical values. 

The second group addressed chapters five to nine. The fifth chapter elaborates on finding information and supporting ideas. In this chapter, one gets to learn how to acquire knowledge can be achieved. There are several types of source information. They include personal experience, library resources, the Internet, and interviews with other individuals. Despite utilizing these sources, it is essential to understand that they each contain pros and cons. When offering a presentation, the use of examples, surveys, and testimony comes in handy. It is, however, essential to consider the ethical use of supporting materials. This ethics includes offering the best possible sources, citing information to avoid plagiarism, and representing all sources equally and fairly. 

In the sixth chapter, we address organizing and outlining your presentation. It is crucial to understand that organization helps the listeners have a better understanding of a presentation, problem-solving is employed, and a great introduction and conclusion are brought forth. There are several principles of outlining. They include subordination, division, and parallelism. When presenting a speech, there are several ways in which one can organize their work. This is through time sequence patterns, cause-effect patterns, spatial relations patterns, and topical sequence patterns. When engaging with these patterns, it is crucial to understand that there are several types, and they play different roles. These organizational patterns include problem-solving patterns and Monroe's motivated sequence. Before introducing your presentation, four functions are helpful. It is essential to be aware that there are four functions of an introduction. These functions include gaining and maintaining attention, relating the topic to the audience, relating the speaker to the topic, and reviewing the message. A conclusion also functions as a signal to tell the audience the speech is over and to remind the audience of the central ideas. 

The seventh chapter elaborates on the delivery of speeches. There are five modes of delivering a speech. They include manuscript speech, memorized speech, spontaneous speech, and impromptu speech. It is essential to keep in mind that each of these modes contains advantages and disadvantages. Factors such as pausing and use of gestures, fluency, and facial expression are essential. In the eighth chapter, we get to learn about the choice of words. Choosing words helps in the proper delivery of the presentation. Additionally, using ethical words is a necessity. One can improve their language during a presentation by selecting the appropriate language for the audience and choosing a language that the audience is able to understand. In the ninth chapter, we get to learn how technology is essential in the field of public speaking. This chapter precisely indicates how the five senses are crucial. Factors such as visual aids such as computers, slide dock programs, text slides, and tables are also not left out. 

The third and last group presented the remaining four chapters, which included presenting to inform, presenting the persuasive message, speaking on special occasions, and appendix-working and presenting as a group. In the tenth chapter, we get to learn how to inform the topic. This is achieved by creating a relationship with the topic. It is essential to understand that there are several types of topics: informative presentation and creative presentation. It is the role of the presenter to ensure the audience understands the information. This can be achieved by making the audience a part of the presentation, relating the topic to the audience, and presenting ideas in simple and concrete ways. There are several principles of learning. They include building on the known, humor and wit, and sensory aid. As a presenterengages with the audience, it is essential to maintain the ethics of speech. This includes the use of reliable sources, not spreading false information, and quoting the information correctly. In the eleventh chapter, we get to learn what is a persuasive presentation. This is defined to be the act of convincing someone to buy something or engage in some activity. It is crucial to understand that this is different from an informative presentation that uses facts and statistics to inform the audience. Persuasion also contains ethos, pathos, and logos. When persuading a group of people. The presenter can utilize strategies such as consistency persuasion, benefits persuasion, and small and gradual change persuasion. 

In the next chapter, we get to explain about speaking on special occasions. There are several types of special occasion presentations. They include the speech of nomination, dedication presentation, and presentation of commemoration. The last chapter is identified as an appendix- working and presenting as a group. This chapter focuses on the presentation of both small and large groups. It is vital to recognize the type of group presentation: symposia, panels, and debates. These groups conduct some activities to remain connected. These activities include communicating as a group and facilitating public communication. The chapter illustrates that skills such as creativity, coordination, and the ability to incorporate discussion are essential for effective group presentations. A group can plan their production in different ways. These ways include agreeing on a topic, discussing the objective, and dividing responsibilities. Lastly, a group is able to evaluate their productivity by observing, reflecting upon, and evaluating group behavior. Additionally, rehearsing can be effective in evaluation. By employing all factors presented in the fourteen chapters, one is able to develop their public speaking skills and knowledge.

 Studying public speaking helps you to use your right to speak freely, which is protected by the law. In many countries, people are scared to talk about their leaders, government, and policies, and in some places, speaking publicly can be dangerous. In the United States, however, we have a set of rules, The Bill of Rights, which encourages its citizens to share their opinions and ideas. Freedom of speech is really important for our democracy, and being a good citizen in a democracy means staying informed about what is happening and being able to talk about it with others. Taking a public speaking course can help you become an active member of your community and our government. I often feel anxious about public speaking, but I recognize the importance of developing this skill for personal growth and effective communication.

For this past presentation, I was placed in Group One, and I could not have been happier. Everyone was so supportive and helpful towards one another. Our group was filled with anxiety before our presentation, but once it was over, the relief was substantial. The supportive comments from our professor congratulating our performances brought a warm sense of accomplishment and encouragement. It was very nice to see how supportive everyone throughout the class was, being attentive, respectful, and engaged. We presented chapters one through four from the textbook, covering how to get started, preparing your presentation, selecting a topic and purpose, analyzing the audience, and everything in between. I gained knowledge about the crucial initial steps, such as how to effectively start a presentation and thoroughly prepare for it. Additionally, I learned the importance of selecting a relevant and engaging topic, aligning it with a clear purpose. Analyzing the audience's needs and characteristics was another key takeaway, enabling me to tailor my speeches to better connect with listeners. Overall, this experience provided me with a solid foundation in public speaking, emphasizing the significance of meticulous preparation and audience-centered communication. 



The following class, Group Two presented chapters five through nine. I gained important insights into various aspects of effective public speaking. Specifically, I learned how to gather and utilize information to support my ideas, ensuring the credibility and relevance of my content. Additionally, I gained knowledge on the art of organizing presentations for maximum impact, as well as strategies for delivering speeches with confidence and poise. The lessons on choosing words wisely and utilizing visual resources underscored the significance of effective communication and engagement with the audience. Overall, this segment of the course equipped me with valuable tools and techniques to enhance my public speaking skills and create compelling presentations. I not only discovered how to locate credible sources to bolster my ideas but also how to integrate this information seamlessly into my presentations. I grasped the significance of structuring speeches logically, ensuring that my audience could follow my ideas effortlessly. For a recent class presentation, I applied these principles by creating a well-organized outline that helped me convey my message succinctly and persuasively. I acquired strategies to conquer nervousness and present with confidence. For example, during my last presentation in front of a sizable audience, I employed techniques like controlled breathing and maintaining eye contact, resulting in a much-improved delivery. The emphasis on word choice and visual aids stuck with me, as I now appreciate how selecting the right words can make a substantial difference in how my message is received. The utilization of visual resources enhanced my ability to convey complex data effectively.



Lastly, Group Three presented chapters ten through twelve, covering topics of presenting to inform, presenting persuasive messages, and speaking on special occasions. I learned how to effectively convey information in a clear and engaging manner. For example, I discovered the importance of structuring informative speeches logically, providing relevant facts and examples, and ensuring that the audience grasps the key points. This knowledge will be particularly useful when delivering presentations like educational seminars or business reports. I now understand the significance of crafting compelling arguments supported by evidence and persuasive techniques. For instance, I learned how to use emotional appeals and persuasive language to influence my audience's opinions, a skill that can prove invaluable in contexts such as marketing pitches or advocacy campaigns. Group Three's presentation taught me how to rise to the occasion when speaking at special events. I learned the importance of adapting my speech to the specific occasion, whether it's a wedding toast, a eulogy, or a commencement address. Understanding how to strike the right tone and deliver a memorable message during these moments is an essential skill that I can apply in various personal and professional settings. This presentation provided me with a well-rounded foundation in public speaking, equipping me with the knowledge and skills needed to inform, persuade, and inspire audiences in a wide range of situations.



In our group presentations, I experienced the support that public speaking fosters. Group One taught me the crucial steps in crafting impactful speeches, while Group Two expanded my horizons, emphasizing the power of information, organization, and confident delivery. Group Three illuminated persuasive communication, effective information sharing, and adapting to special occasions, which has helped me to now feel better prepared to engage in informed conversations, convey ideas persuasively, and rise to the occasion. Public speaking isn't just talking; it's actively participating in democracy, and this course has equipped me to do just that. These group presentations not only enhanced my public speaking skills but also showcased the incredible power of collaboration and support within our learning community. Each group contributed unique insights, fostering a rich environment for growth and learning. Beyond the technical aspects of public speaking, I gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of effective communication in all aspects of life. 


As Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "Speech is power: speech is to persuade, to convert, to compel." This highlights the extreme influence of effective communication. It presents speech as a powerful tool that can influence, convert, and coerce people and communities. This realization serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with good communication given that it may influence the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of others and, in turn, have an effect on our environment.

Public speaking was always something that was hard for me, it was something i feared to do especially in front of an audience. Ive always been the type to become anxious in a public speaking platform but being in this particular class it has opened my mind to realize that public speaking is an art.



    When joining class for the second time this whole semester, it was nerve wracking to learn that we had to do a group presentation that lasts 40-45 minutes. We got assigned into groups and i am very happy to say that i got assigned to group one, even if it meant being the first group to present, being an example for the rest of the class.  We had to read chapters 1-4, and further our learning about the presentation process and everything that came along with it. While reading these topics, I learned how complex public speaking can be. The presenter has to take in consideration various things, like what type of audience are they presenting to, what topics can they talk about, what setting are they in, is there any type of interference with the channel. 
    Group one, had amazing leaders, Olivia, Gabby and Kelly, they lead us to have a smooth ride and presentation. They always kept in contact with the whole group and made sure that everyone was on track and there was no confusion. The group in a whole was very interactive with each other, we shared our ideas and never held back our opinion towards anything. We all communicated with one another  and made sure everyone was comfortable with what had to be done. When someone in the group couldn't fulfill what they had to, anyone was happy to jump in and help the group to achieve the completion of the powerpoint. 
    When the day of presentation came. everyone in the group was anxious and nervous, since this is something that was new to all of us and we were the first ones to do this. That same morning we all texted each other in the group chat that we had and told each other that we were going to do perfect and to just trust one another in this process. When we started presenting, you can tell that everyone was nervous, the tone of our voices, the way we would fidget with our hands or hair, the way we would look around and stutter but this was okay, this was all new to us. We celebrated everyone as the presentation went on, and by the time we got to end, we were all relieved that we had done so well and managed to save time. When we heard our professor say that we had done a great job, we all realized that all of our anxiousness and nervousness had been over. 
    
    The class after, Group two had to present about chapters 5-9 which were about research topics and what you can add to your presentation to make the speaker more confident. Group two discusses the advantages of research in presentations, which include expanding ones knowledge, stying updated with the latest information, enhancing credibility and exposing oneself fresh ideas. This made me gain understanding on how important it is to maintain organization for a public speaker, this allows a boost of confidence, facilitation the speakers task and points they are trying to achieve and improves audience comprehension. Group 2 also introduced the Extemporaneous Mode, which demands an outline and notes for a more spontaneous presentation. They also mentions how non-verbal communication like eye contact, and body language contribute to the audiences reaction towards the presentation of the public speaker. 
    Lastly, Group 3 had to present, teaching the class methods on how to catch the audiences attention and keeping them engaged into the presentation. They mentioned the importance of always going back to the main point, making sure that the audience is on track with the speech, while also making the topic as relevant as possible towards the audience . Also incorporating humor into the presentation maintains the audience interest. Group 3 included a persuasive techniques of logos, pathos and ethos. Ethics played a substantial role in these presentations, emphasizing the use of other sources, integrity, while showing respect towards the audience. They also included videos as examples of speeches and how to grab the audiences attention even when there is physical or psychological blockage. 
    Overall, every single group proved their point and perfected a part of the art of public speaking. While none of us knew this at the time while we were presenting, this presentation helped us improve ourselves while giving a speech or even presenting towards a class. I feel like this class will help all of my class mates, into enjoying doing presentations more often, getting less nervous and anxious as the time goes by, of even something so simple as speaking up in class. These group presentations have brought us all closer in our groups and have helped us develop a bond with our classmates even if we are talking ot each other on zoom or through text message. This class is going to help us all individually and make us great public speakers.This is only the beginning and we have several more ahead of us. All of our presentations are recorded, allowing us the opportunity to review and make adjustments to anything that may not had worked for us as a group. This will only get better as we grow more accustomed towards this task. I am beyond excited to embark on our future projects, knowing that all of us will have many possibillites ahead of us.

     I really enjoyed the presentations. The topics were super interesting, and my classmates were really creative, clever, and their productivity was amazing. They used interesting vocabulary and they put pictures which called the audience attention. The groups did a really good job. The presentations were visually stunning.           

    In the first presentation I learned very interesting topics that I will keep in mind. They were: Getting started to public speaking, preparing your first presentation, selecting a topic and purpose, analyzing your audience. I learned that in public speaking we learned to listen to others. And also, how to become an effective speaker. I learned how public speaking is a unique form of communication for several reasons. How being a first time speaker is exciting and most of the time we get nervous and that is extremely normal. But we learned some tips that helps us reduce our fear of presenting.

        1.    Challenge your worries

        2.    Focus on the materials less on the audience

   3.    Take a deep breath this can be very calming


    4.    Avoid eye contact make you less anxious


    5.    Practice in the mirror or in front of a family member 


These are some tips that really call my attention and I will practice before my next presentation. I loved the tips.

 

     There is also four different types of presentations Impromptu presentations, presenting yourself, presenting a classmate and demonstration presentations without preparation. Meaning you need to organize your ideas in less than 5 minutes before presenting. Some tips I learned are to focus your message, think about the audience and just be you! Another type of presentations is presenting yourself this action is made with the purpose how other people see you in which you describe your background, hobbies and interests. Tips: develop structure, focus on small details, be thoughtful. The third presentation is presenting a classmate usually during this type of presentation you are asked to interview a classmate and create a presentation about that person. Tips: plan interview questions, record answers, start with the basics, be ethical. A demonstration presentation is a type of presentation in which your goal is to teach a task to the audience. Tips: organize logically, use visual aids, explain the value of the presentation, invite the audience to ask questions. When we talk about impromptu presentation means that is a speech that a person provides.


    During the second presentation which was group number two, it was basically finding information and supporting your ideas, organizing and outlining your presentation delivering speeches, choosing your words, visual resources and presentation technology. I learned how effective speakers achieve success with well-crafted presentations that contains good evidence and support. To cite a text correctly APA format and MLA format. When identifying appropriate supporting materials examples there are two types factual and hypothetical. Surveys the audience believes that surveys are more credible than just the opinion of 1 person specifically. Testimony there are three kinds of testimonial evidence lay testimony, expert testimony celebrity testimony. The ethical presenters must be able to present the best possible sources of the information being presented. Speaker has the obligation of citing the sources used for information. The principles of outlining the first principle allows you to indicate which material is important and which is less important through indentation and symbols. Division is the second principle which states that the point is divided.I also learned delivering speeches memorized mode involves presenting based on strictly memory, this enables full use of delivery speeches, on the downside this mode can be too rigid. Manuscript mode a presentation mode involving reading out a pre prepared manuscript verbatim. Extemporaneous mode a predicated presentation giving with only a keyboard outline. Impromptu presentation this mode requires little no preparation time. This can be seen as advantageous specially since its more spontaneous. To use your voice effectively rate is the speed of delivery. Also pause for a brief silence for effect, duration how long something lasts, rhythm the tempo of the speech, volume the loudness of softness of your voice, enunciation the pronunciation and articulation of words, fluency the smoothness of delivery.             


        In the third presentation I learned about, presenting to inform. During this presentation present to inform, presenting persuasive messages, speaking on special occasions, appendix-working and presenting as a group. The first principles of learning build on the known, humor and wit, sensory aids. Organize to optimize learning create an outline to create a skeleton of the information. I learned to inform the topic how can you relate to this topic relate the presenter and the audience to the topic. Grabs people’s attention arouse the audience, courtesy, and interest about your topic. Understand the information state and repeat the main idea and generalize the information in the presentation. Present ideas in a simple and concrete way. Relate the topic the topic to the audience. Make the audience a part of the presentation. Remember the information reveal the audience what you want them to learn from your presentation. Indicate what information you want your audience to remember. Repeat the main idea two or three times during the presentation. Pause and use gestures to indicate the importance of the information. Apply the information applied immediately is remember longer. An action trying under supervision is more likely to be tried again later. Organize, this is to make the information easy to understand. Using reliable sources, do not spread false information. Stages of preparing a presentation group should prepare themselves with certain stages when arranging their presentation. First agreeing on a topic, dividing responsibilities, assigning presentation roles, quality control.

 

            All the groups presented awesome I learn new things and saved tips to become a better speaker and how to lose fear while talking in public. It was nice that they took the time to present and that we all learn from each other. They put a lot of work on their slides I liked the way they put pictures and the text was very clearly and understandable.

    When taking a class like Introduction to Public Speaking, you walk in expecting to be pushed out of your comfort zone and be met with a world of information that will help push you forward, regardless of what field you hope to break into post graduation. While I was expecting to be met with boundary pushing out of the box emotions, I was greeted with a safe space and a team that supports each other through their strengths and weaknesses. My group, Group 1, was the first to present in our class for this assignment. This for some of our members, myself included, had added a layer of stress. At the end of this experience, after my own group presented and after we watched our peers present their projects, I saw how wrong my assumptions were and knew that this class was a place of growth and support. 



    The start of this assignment was a bit nerve wracking for me. I knew no one in my group and the virtual aspect was not an aid in socializing with my peers. Later on, this virtual aspect would be our saving grace. When we began we used Google Docs and Google Slides to aid us with working simultaneously but at our own time and pace without having to worry about outside factors interfering. We divided and conquered with our topics and got straight to work. Throughout the planning process, we referenced each other and not just our textbook for support. Each slide and each topic opened a world of information adding depth to something that seemed so simple. For example, practice your speech became to me, practice your gestures, your key points, your body language, and your facial expressions. Knowing your audience for me became learning how to engage, and strategize how to get your point across. This bloom of information began to make a world of sense to me and my peers. 

The day before we had to present was a day off from school, in our group chat, we were wishing each other luck and hoping for the best when suddenly an outside factor began to worry us and we needed to adapt. This virtual aspect of our class which I had been worried would be a roadblock for us became our saving grace. We met on Zoom on our day off and strategized and reworked our presentation before the big day. We even had a chance to rehearse! This short experience made me feel more confident and prepared for the day of the presentation. As SGA President at my home campus, I am often thrown into a quick speech on the day of events which has made me more comfortable behind the podium, but not behind the screen. For me personally, speaking on Zoom to a class can be just as nerve wracking as speaking to a cohort on campus, maybe even a little more. To make matters worse, on the day of our presentation, I lost my voice to a cold! Thankfully, when it was my time to speak, my team, my peers, and my professor were all kind and understanding, supporting me the whole way. Once our presentation ended we celebrated each other in our group chat, elated that this all worked out fabulously. 

In the coming classes following our presentation, I knew I had to help make my peers feel just as strong and supported as they did for our group. Before each group presented I sent messages in our class chat wishing them luck and showing every ounce of support I could. What I loved the most about seeing the other groups present was not just the support we showed as a class, but the differences between each group's methods and presentation. While some groups thrived in the content area, others were wonderful with visual aids and components. Seeing the different formats and templates each group used was absolutely a joy! It was great to see how each group of students interpreted the content and assignment differently to produce their product. To me, it's important that we celebrate our differences and share our uniqueness with each other to help each one of us grow and succeed. 

Overall, this experience with my peers has been quite a positive one that I am thankful to have undergone together. From start to finish, each and every one of us has experienced some form of growth, whether it's having to have spoken independently for a presentation before or if it was just learning how to use the Google Suite to make our presentation come to life. We all learned something. For me, one of the biggest takeaways was how important it is to be flexible and practice adaptability. We as a group faced an outside factor we thought would hinder our work and come together as a team to solve it, that's teamwork. While I have some public speaking experience, the presentations each group put together have taught me the why and the how behind many aspects I consciously knew I was doing and even some that I didn't realize I had used before! I hope that my peers have come out of this project feeling stronger and more secure in their public speaking skills. Some people think you only need to learn how to speak if your job requires it, but I completely disagree. Everyone should have some foundation in speaking skills because that’s how we communicate! It's important as a professional to know your audience, know how to get your point across, know how to feel confident when speaking, and most importantly to know how to listen, and this project has helped me feel more confident in doing just that.

    I really enjoyed watching all of the presentations on all of the chapters about public speaking. If I'm being honest public speaking has always frightened me as I'm a shy person myself. I recently started a new job about three months ago. I took the job of "Learning Assistant" at Miami Dade College in the Hialeah Campus. This new job required me to go to the new student orientations and present in front of roughly 50 students. I felt scared since I really didn't know much about speaking in front of an audience, but hearing all of my classmates presentations have definitely made me feel more confident about speaking to a large audience because of all of the tips and tricks I've learned. 


    My group which was Group One by the way, presented chapters 1-4. Reading these chapters definitely gave me a lot of knowledge into the field of public speaking which I didn't have before. Through this presentation I learned that it's ok to be nervous, it happens to the best of us. I learned to choose vital topics, current topics and other things the audience would be interested in hearing about. I also learned some of the things to avoid while giving a presentation. Although being nervous is completely nervous, being too nervous can ruin your presentation. Engaging with audience is another key factor as you don't want to lose them. Also focusing on what the audience needs is a must as you don't want to get side tracked. I also learned that practice makes perfect, and practicing your speech before hand is a must. Audience analysis was also something I learned while working on this presentation. Analyzing your audience is very important to carry your message across. Knowing your audience's beliefs and opinions on a topic can make a big difference in how your speech is received. Things like demographics, and conventional wisdom are terms I learned while researching for this presentation that have stuck with me. These are so important to know as they tell a lot about your audience.




    Moreover, while watching Group Two's presentation on chapters 5-9 I also obtained lots of more information to further better my public speaking abilities. They talked about research for presentations which, expands your knowledge, gives you the latest information, raises your credibility and introduces you to new ideas. Group two also talked about different types of sources for information like sharing your personal experiences, getting resources from the library and internet, and also interviewing others. I learned the importance of staying organized, as this makes things easier for the speaker. This helps you to feel more confident and helps the audience understand you better. Another interesting point group two made was the different ways of delivering speeches. Memorized Mode is you going off strictly by what you have memorized. There's also Manuscript Mode which involves the speaker reading out a pre prepared manuscript on what they are talking about. This helps to avoid mistakes and barely required any practice as you already have what you're going to say written. The only bad thing about this method is poor delivery to your audience. Luckily group two mentioned another method called Extemporaneous Mode. This way of presenting only requires an outline and some notes to present. This mode does requires a lot of practice as you are mostly free styling the presentation with your own words.There's also Impromptu Mode which is the speaker improvising and going off on their own. This group also went over other key factors such as how to use your body to communicate with your audience. They talked about the importance of eye contact, your facial expressions, gestures, movements and attire. This group did an overall amazing job in their presentation and provided me with such great information for the future.  




    In addition to that, Group Three went over chapter 10-12. They talked about grabbing the audience's attention and keeping them engaged with your presentation. This group also mentioned ways for your audience to clearly understand the information you are giving them which I found very helpful. They said to state and repeat the main idea, present all of your ideas in a simple way and to relate your topic to the audience. Another tip they gave was to inform the audience what you want them to get out of your presentation and to tell them what information you want them to remember. Group two also talked about incorporating humor into your speech. Doing this can make the presentation more enjoyable and interesting to the audience and keeps them paying attention. Rewarding the audience and letting them know what they will get out of this speech at the end can make their experience feel more rewarding. They also mentioned ethos, pathos and logos as the methods of persuasion one can use to persuade the audience. There are different types of persuasive speeches like some to convince, some to inspire, and others to help your audience take specific action. Ethics is another big piece of information I took from this presentation. I learned about using reliable sources, being trustworthy, and being respectful to your audience. Additionally, they talked about special occasion presentations and how to prepare for them. I also loved the Kobe Bryant acceptance speech they chose as an example of a special occasion speech.I really enjoyed group three's presentation and loved their powerpoint and the way they chose to decorate it. They gave out a lot of useful information and explained everything with great detail. 




    In conclusion I loved watching everyone's presentations. I really loved the way in which we all had to read the chapters which informed us about how to deliver a speech successfully on top of actually having to present it in front of the whole class online. I don't think I'll ever present the same way ever again as I now know all of these terms that I learned through our class presentations.  So far I'm really enjoying this class and love the way everything's set out as it'll be very beneficial in my public speaking journey as this is such a big part of life.

            Not only am I satisfied with every group’s overall performance, but I am also astounded with the groups’ productivity and willingness to go the extra mile. Especially being a part of group, one has been a great experience that I can only imagine becoming better.

            Firstly, it would be unfair to not acknowledge Olivia and Gabi’s leadership. Throughout the course of our collaboration on the project not only were they always present and focused but they were always willing to put the team on their shoulders if they felt like they needed to.

            Having two great leaders like Olivia and Gabi made a great difference. They were always available in the group chat we had, and even if they may not have been available at a certain time, they made sure to respond to any questions, comments, or concerns. The group effort was there, and it was there because their willingness to take the lead and teeter off each other’s willingness to help.

            Furthermore, I think the atmosphere we as individuals (in group one) created was one unique and very inviting. This atmosphere made sure that not only everyone’s voice was heard but that also productivity was optimized. We all fed off of each other and bounced ideas back and forth throughout the process. Making sure that we were all on the same page, it was hard for anything to come as a surprise to us both in the short and long term.

            Eventually, the day of the presentation came. Because of our thorough planning we made not only an excellent introduction but also an excellent middle and conclusion of the presentation that made it all very cohesive and never dull at any moment. I found myself intrigued with how different everyone’s personality in every group’s was and how each personality gave each presentation its own flavor. As of right now, I must admit, it has been a fair number of days since our presentations, so it is hard to remember all that was said, but there are in fact some things I do remember that have stuck to my memory.

            For example, as mentioned before our group’s cohesiveness was excellent. We all jumped from idea to idea in a very smooth manner and gave up the light to the next presenter in a sophisticated way. Each presenter thanked the audience for their time and gave the next presenter an easy way to transition in.

            Our group’s ability also to manage time was something I knew we would be good at but not something I thought we would be even better at. Everyone gave their share, and their share was never too much and never too little. In the end, each presenter did not go off into intelligible rants that sucked up the time not only for the class but for the other presenters in the group. Each presenter was very concise and consistent with their talking points. From point A to point B, then from point B to point C and boom, conclusion! “Thanks for listening and next is…” is exactly how it went. We were wise with our time because it was not only something we practiced but something we valued greatly because we knew that for starters, the most said in the least amount of time in simple terms keeps the audience engaged and the ready for the next bit. Having this up our sleeves made a great deal of difference, and I am very proud, in a humble way, of our groups efforts at our ability to deliver and transition.

            Let’s not forget every group’s great use of imagery and illustrations. The ability to create thoughts in the listeners mind’s that evoked not only illustrations but also experiences in a way and emotions was awesome. By giving the listeners something to see in a sense, we not only enhanced engagement but also enhanced at our ability to express concepts better. For example, excuse my short-term memory, but I remember a member of group giving their portion of the speech and illustrating the scene of their religious beliefs. From baptisms to anti-abortions, the images of both an individual sharing their experience of being baptized and protesting abortions flashed through my mind. I really appreciated these images because they helped me latch onto what the person was saying.

            Lastly, the fact that every group had fun and were authentic is what really gave every group its own uniqueness. Just from hearing the tone of everyone’s voice, it is easy for me to acknowledge the fact that although some of us were nervous, it was indeed a good nervousness. It was one that was anxious but not one that was anxious in fear but anxious in the fact that this was and maybe was very novel to us. Regardless, new or not, we all had a sense of authenticity in the way that we spoke because we were not afraid to let our nervousness seep through a large smile that gave our talks its own flavor.

On behalf of group one, I believe it’s safe to say that it was very new, but a very good experience. One that will continue to develop as one whole experience as we continue delivering speeches and gaining knowledge not only on the topics, we research but, on the people, we are individually but also the people we are. In the end, we all had a blast, we all left our mark on the way we delivered every concept and word, dialect and emotion in a beautifully authentic way. As only one could imagine, the satisfaction we can all collectively feel is one that is both full of relief and excitement for the next one. On the next, we’ll take what we’ve learned and will continue to not only be authentic in the way that we’re not afraid to be nervous or to share our own beliefs perfectly dressed in the illustrations we communicate, but also have fun in the pursuit of becoming greater and more comfortable, educated and proud speakers.

Maria Valeria De Sousa - Post 1

Speaking or giving some type of speech is something completely common and something that all of us should learn to develop as a tool in our daily lives. Studying a subject like this allows us, based on my reflection as a communication student in another country, to develop as people in our speech and way of impacting each of the people whom we address with our own words. We, human beings, when addressing another person, must consider our speaker, our message, the channel through which we transmit that message, etc. At the same time, we must consider our form of speech and whether it is used correctly according to the audience to which we are going to address.  

As far as I am concerned, I can say that both our presentation and its development is something positive for us and for our colleagues due to its importance. Despite being a class that some of us must see to fulfill a number of credits or as a requirement to enter universities within the United States, we cannot forget that this, like many others, teaches us something particular such as the art of "speaking" in public. The presentation that was prepared as a group not only made us understand that we all have the ability to choose the correct words to function when explaining what "Public Speaking" was like in this case, at the same time it allowed us to see how we take the time to do things well and the same studies allow us as future graduates to prepare presentations, speeches and so on for any type of audience with a specific purpose. 

What I enjoyed most about my presentation could be said was talking about the types of speeches and clear purposes that one should have when creating one. I could also highlight that seeing how we all worked as a team and helped each other was something very fruitful, since not in all cases people work together to achieve the main goal that was giving the class and the professor the best presentation. I couldn't honestly say that I didn't like something about our presentation, because we had too much communication and ability to resolve things to do a good job. We all cooperated so that the work and presentation were pleasant and understanding for all the people in our class.  The same presentation helps to support the importance of communication, speeches, teamwork, among other things.

Regarding the other presentations, I could highlight in the case of chapters five to nine that the organization of the ideas to be presented is important in order to have a great presentation. Audiovisual materials have to go hand in hand in order to in turn be a support for understanding the presentation. Research helps us discover things, manage content, understand and analyze it; so that we can talk about him with confidence. It is important to verify the validity and it should be highlighted because today we have many sources of information. In turn, all material must be verified and evaluated correctly. 

 I think it is also important to practice techniques to manage the understanding and memorization of the content, along with its question and answer modality. Voice, eye contact and words are key when giving a presentation. The language must be evaluated correctly to avoid misunderstandings and, above all, any particular problems such as inclusion, figurative language, etc.  

I think that in the case of the third presentation that covers from chapter 10 to 12, the three types of speeches are equally important in their own way. The informative seeks to inform you of something that you may or may not know. The persuasive seeks to convince you about an idea, a thought or a concept. While when they are special occasions, it depends on the same characteristics of the event to develop the presentation. Everything is in the way of giving the speech, its language and without leaving aside: the main reason why it is done. 

Each and every one of the chapters is important and attracts a lot of attention. In itself, everyone has a relationship and seeks to use communication as a tool for recreation, growth and means to provide a message. The conclusion I can reach is that regardless of the division of material and what each of us presented, communication is important regardless of whether or not we are students of that profession.
