Presentation Summary

Public speaking is an art and skill that cannot only be learned but also mastered. It is crucial to understand that there are numerous benefits of speaking in public, both to an individual and even business. For a precise elaboration of the components of public speaking, it is essential to summarize the fourteen chapters that were presented in class. The first group gave an introduction to public speaking. This was achieved in the first four chapters, which were identified as getting started with public speaking, preparing your first presentation, selecting a topic and purpose, and analyzing your audience. The first subtopic stated was speaking excites. This precisely elaborated on the first time an individual engages in public speaking and the emotions experienced. The most common feeling experienced by individuals is nervousness. It is crucial to understand that after some time, one gets to manage the senses and offer one's best.

In the first chapter, we also got to learn the importance of public speaking. These factors include the creation of solid relationships and speaking for ourselves. In this chapter, we also get to know the seven components of the communication process. These include the source, receiver, message, a channel, feedback, the situation, and noise. As one gets to learn public speaking, it is essential to learn about the topics to speak about. Considering factors such as choosing the most vital issues and topics that improve an audience are the priorities. It is also essential to understand factors to avoid while presenting. These may include insulting the audience and plagiarism. The chapter also indicates the importance of reducing the fear of presentation. It is essential to challenge your worries and practice more before engaging in anything.

In the second chapter, we learn how to prepare for a presentation. This is achieved by gathering the appropriate materials, reviewing the expectations, maintaining organization and clarity, and practicing. It is also crucial to understand the common types of presentations. These include impromptu presentations, self-presentations, demonstration presentations, and classmate presentations. In all these types of presentations, it is essential to search for a topic and purpose precisely. The search for a topic can be achieved by a perfect evaluation. It is necessary to check both the general meaning and the specific purpose. It is also essential to consider the thesis statement. After having an ideal topic, it is vital for your audience. This can be done through observation, interviews, questionnaires, and group identification. Lastly, we have the analysis of the situation. This will include the size of the audience, time, occasion, and environment. As mentioned, the uniqueness of the classroom audience is an essential factor to consider. A speaker is also required to adapt to the audience and show ethical values.

The second group addressed chapters five to nine. The fifth chapter elaborates on finding information and supporting ideas. In this chapter, one gets to learn how to acquire knowledge can be achieved. There are several types of source information. They include personal experience, library resources, the Internet, and interviews with other individuals. Despite utilizing these sources, it is essential to understand that they each contain pros and cons. When offering a presentation, the use of examples, surveys, and testimony comes in handy. It is, however, essential to consider the ethical use of supporting materials. This ethics includes offering the best possible sources, citing information to avoid plagiarism, and representing all sources equally and fairly.

In the sixth chapter, we address organizing and outlining your presentation. It is crucial to understand that organization helps the listeners have a better understanding of a presentation, problem-solving is employed, and a great introduction and conclusion are brought forth. There are several principles of outlining. They include subordination, division, and parallelism. When presenting a speech, there are several ways in which one can organize their work. This is through time sequence patterns, cause-effect patterns, spatial relations patterns, and topical sequence patterns. When engaging with these patterns, it is crucial to understand that there are several types, and they play different roles. These organizational patterns include problem-solving patterns and Monroe's motivated sequence. Before introducing your presentation, four functions are helpful. It is essential to be aware that there are four functions of an introduction. These functions include gaining and maintaining attention, relating the topic to the audience, relating the speaker to the topic, and reviewing the message. A conclusion also functions as a signal to tell the audience the speech is over and to remind the audience of the central ideas.

The seventh chapter elaborates on the delivery of speeches. There are five modes of delivering a speech. They include manuscript speech, memorized speech, spontaneous speech, and impromptu speech. It is essential to keep in mind that each of these modes contains advantages and disadvantages. Factors such as pausing and use of gestures, fluency, and facial expression are essential. In the eighth chapter, we get to learn about the choice of words. Choosing words helps in the proper delivery of the presentation. Additionally, using ethical words is a necessity. One can improve their language during a presentation by selecting the appropriate language for the audience and choosing a language that the audience is able to understand. In the ninth chapter, we get to learn how technology is essential in the field of public speaking. This chapter precisely indicates how the five senses are crucial. Factors such as visual aids such as computers, slide dock programs, text slides, and tables are also not left out.

The third and last group presented the remaining four chapters, which included presenting to inform, presenting the persuasive message, speaking on special occasions, and appendix-working and presenting as a group. In the tenth chapter, we get to learn how to inform the topic. This is achieved by creating a relationship with the topic. It is essential to understand that there are several types of topics: informative presentation and creative presentation. It is the role of the presenter to ensure the audience understands the information. This can be achieved by making the audience a part of the presentation, relating the topic to the audience, and presenting ideas in simple and concrete ways. There are several principles of learning. They include building on the known, humor and wit, and sensory aid. As a presenterengages with the audience, it is essential to maintain the ethics of speech. This includes the use of reliable sources, not spreading false information, and quoting the information correctly. In the eleventh chapter, we get to learn what is a persuasive presentation. This is defined to be the act of convincing someone to buy something or engage in some activity. It is crucial to understand that this is different from an informative presentation that uses facts and statistics to inform the audience. Persuasion also contains ethos, pathos, and logos. When persuading a group of people. The presenter can utilize strategies such as consistency persuasion, benefits persuasion, and small and gradual change persuasion.

In the next chapter, we get to explain about speaking on special occasions. There are several types of special occasion presentations. They include the speech of nomination, dedication presentation, and presentation of commemoration. The last chapter is identified as an appendix- working and presenting as a group. This chapter focuses on the presentation of both small and large groups. It is vital to recognize the type of group presentation: symposia, panels, and debates. These groups conduct some activities to remain connected. These activities include communicating as a group and facilitating public communication. The chapter illustrates that skills such as creativity, coordination, and the ability to incorporate discussion are essential for effective group presentations. A group can plan their production in different ways. These ways include agreeing on a topic, discussing the objective, and dividing responsibilities. Lastly, a group is able to evaluate their productivity by observing, reflecting upon, and evaluating group behavior. Additionally, rehearsing can be effective in evaluation. By employing all factors presented in the fourteen chapters, one is able to develop their public speaking skills and knowledge.
